Congratulations Flora Lucero, Meta Hirschl, and Justin Garoutte!
Nasty Women New Mexico has completed its membership poll for our endorsement of candidates in the upcoming April 6, 2019, election of Bernalillo County Democratic Party leaders. We are pleased to announce that the majority voted to endorse the slate of Flora Lucero for County Chair, and includes Meta Hirschl and Justin Garoutte* for County Vice-Chairs.
Democrats in Bernalillo County are fortunate to have, in each of these candidates, undeniably committed, hard-working and talented individuals who want to lead the party. All candidates for the leadership positions bring a wealth of varied and relevant experience with them.
These are exceptional times, and we all stand together to build an inclusive party that not only reflects our values, but a party that will prevail.
For those of you who haven’t met Justin, here’s some information from his bio:
Justin Garoutte is from Antonito, a small village in el Valle de San Luis at the headwaters of the Río Grande. As a community organizer, Justin founded Valleybound, the Antonito School and Community Garden, an empowering food justice space in the Conejos Land Grant Region. Shortly thereafter, he joined Conejos Clean Water as executive director, also serving as Board Trustee to the Town of Antonito during this time.
Among his current political work, Justin was elected as a delegate to the 2018 Pre-Primary Convention. As a mixed-race, genderqueer gay man, he is proud to work for the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation, striving to reduce LGBTQ adolescent suicide in New Mexico. He lives in the Near North Valley with his husband, Ethan Ortega, and is finishing his Master of Public Health at the University of New Mexico in May.
- Justin graciously stepped in when Javier Benevidez’ new position prevented his being able to run for this election. Thanks, Justin – you’re a terrific addition!
