Flip CD2

“Every once in awhile you meet a candidate who blows your skirt up – when she can also flip a Republican House seat, that’s HUGE.”

US House Rep – NM Congressional  District 2

Success!  Xochitl won [108,489 (50.93%) to 97,767 (49.07%)]. In flipping the seat held by Steve Pearce since 2011, she became first woman to represent the district in its history and only the third Democrat in nearly 50 years

Of note: while Valencia County voted for both Pearce (R) for governor, and Pat Lyons (R) for Land Commissioner, Xochitl took the county by more than 1200 votes. We believe our presence there, our coalition with Albuquerque SwingLeft, and the push  for rural voters to use absentee ballots had a significant impact.

THE INITIAITVE

Rural New Mexicans need another strong voice in Washington and southern New Mexicans need a voice representative of this sprawling district that stretches from the Arizona to the Texas state line and south to the Mexican border. Its demographics have shifted dramatically, and the district is now over 50% Hispanic. New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District is an open seat  (being vacated by Steve Pearce, who is running for governor), where registered Democrats outnumber Republicans.

It’s time for that Democratic majority to get off the porch and get out the vote because, in Xochitl Torres Small, they have the best opportunity they’ve had to win the seat in a decade.

Xochitl has the right combination of experience and ties to the community – she has lived their issues and already fought for them. As a water attorney, she has worked with her neighbors, farmers and business owners to protect water rights, as well as NM public lands and national monuments throughout her career. As a former staffer for Tom Udall, she was instrumental in expanding cell phone and broadband service to rural communities. She clerked for a NM federal judge and has seen first hand the challenges of border security, immigration and the costs of a broken system.

You cannot spend five minutes talking with Xochitl and not feel her passion – this is her land and these are her people. Her story is their story: a grandmother who immigrated from Mexico and worked in the fields, a mom who was a teacher, and a kid growing up without much money who recognized that with hard work and a good education she could make a difference.

CD2 does not deserve Yvette Herrell (Herrell TV ad)  – any more than New Mexico deserved Steve Pearce’s (NRA: A; NARAL:0%) missing more roll call votes than almost any member of Congress this year, or his positions that favor business and the wealthy over the needs of his constituents.

Want to help us Flip CD2 Blue? We canvass in Valencia County every Saturday morning and phone bank on Sundays here in Albuquerque.
